On Saturday May 12th Spike Island cinema club will be screening the movie of one if our most famous visitors – The General Martin Cahill.
Cahill is probably Ireland’s most infamous criminal of the 20th century, with a series of daring raids attributed to his gang. He earned the moniker ‘The General’ for the way he led his troops, and his notoriety was to catch up with him in the end. This evening starts with the same ferry journey the General would have made when he was being sent to Spike and will include a guided tour that focuses on the 1980’s and 1990’s prison. Visitors then get a chance to see the General’s cell that is off limits to regular tours, before making our way to the Spike Island cinema for a screening of the movie, before the return ferry.
