National Heritage Week – Cork

National Heritage Week takes place from the 20th to the 28th of August. There’s lots to see and visit all around Cork and the majority of events are free.

In Ballincollig, there are events such as Teddy Bear Picnics, Junior Soccer & Basketball events, Gunpowder Mill Walk, Park Music Festival, Talks on tracing your Ancestors, the history of Ballincollig Castle. National Heritage Week - Cork - Ring of Cork

Fota House & Gardens also have a range of events for Heritage Week. There are free guided house tours, garden tours as well events such as Family Discovery/ Digging Days and an evening of Irish Music and Song (ticketed) Finding Mrs Kevin’s Cat is another very popular event and an excellent Children’s Tour. The Heritage Society in Glanmire have put together an impressive package of events too including a photographic exhibition, a wonderful knitting and crochet exhibition as well as a Gramophone recital. Cobh Programme of Events include a tour of  St. Coleman’s Cathedra, an exhibitions of handcrafted model ships, talks about Mna na hEireann, Bat & Nature Walk in Cuskinny Woods, Cobh to name but a few. See www.heritageweek.ie for full programme.

In Midleton take the opportunity to take part in a walking tour of the town  as it was in 1916, listen to a talk about living in Midleton 100 years, enjoy an Early Music recital and hear about the history of Spike Island. The highlight of Youghal’s Heritage week must be The Youghal Medieval Festival. It features Battle Re-Enactments, medieval cookery displays, archery and blacksmith displays as well as Arts and Craft making shields ! Crosshaven House will open up for heritage week and Camden Fort Meagher has an Open Weekend.  Both must visits this summer and autumn.
