Recital on the 49-bell grand carillon of Cobh’s Cathedral by resident carillonneur Adrian Gebruers to include religious, classical and popular music specially composed or arranged for this instrument.
This bell recital can be best enjoyed outdoors in the environs of the Cathedral, the car park to the north of the building is a particularly good listening place. The public can view the instrument being played on a closed-circuit screen – turn right on entering the main door of the Cathedral. Cobh Cathedral Carillon is the only such instrument in the Republic and the largest in terms of number of bells in Ireland and Britain. The precisely tuned cast bronze bells cover a range of four chromatic octaves and are played from a console consisting of a keyboard and pedalboard located within the belfry. The total weight of the 49 bells is 26 tons and the bourdon (largest bell) weighs 3.6 tons and is the heaviest bell in Ireland.
